The Best Mahjong Sets of 2026

Mahjong sets swing from $30 travel kits to five-figure design objects. Here's how to pick the right one for how you actually play.

Before you buy: which game?

The single biggest fork: American (NMJL) sets include eight jokers.Chinese sets do not. If you're playing both, buy an American set — you can just ignore the jokers for Chinese play.

Best beginner set

Look for melamine tiles (durable, quiet, kind to fingernails), a numbered rack for each player, and a soft carrying case. $60–$120 covers this bracket. Avoid ultra-cheap plastic sets — the tiles warp and the numbers rub off inside a year.

Best American (NMJL) set

You want pushers (the sticks that shove the wall forward), racks with a recessed shelf for exposed melds, and clear Arabic numerals on suit tiles alongside the Chinese characters. American sets usually include jokers and a small booklet — but the annual NMJL card is bought separately from mahjongg.org.

Best travel set

Look for magnetic tiles or a fitted case with foam inserts. Bone-and-bamboo travel sets look beautiful but are heavy; melamine wins for a suitcase.

Best luxury set

The 2026 revival brought a wave of design-house mahjong: Brunello Cucinelli (walnut, brass, Krion), Hermès, William & Son, and independents like Oh My Mahjong. Prices run $2,000 to $30,000+. You are buying an object, not better gameplay — the game is identical.

What to look for in any set

  • Tile weight. Heavier tiles feel better and are quieter on the table.
  • Etched, not printed. Etched-and-filled markings never wear off.
  • Complete count. Confirm 144 tiles (or 152 for American sets with jokers), plus flowers and seasons.
  • Racks with pushers. Speeds up wall setup dramatically.

Or: skip the set entirely

If you're just learning, don't spend anything. Play a few hundred hands online first — you'll know which variant you like, what tile style you prefer, and whether you actually want to host a night before committing to a physical set.
